Chennai: Lightning strike kills 18-year-old, two others injured

An 18-year-old woman died and two others were injured after a lightning strike in Mathuranthagam, Kancheepuram district, on Thursday night.

CHENNAI: An 18-year-old woman died and two others were injured after a lightning strike in Mathuranthagam, Kancheepuram district, on Thursday night.
Police said Sowmya, 18, of Peruveli village, along with her neighbours, Sasikala, 27, and Vaidhehi, 24, had gone to answer nature’s call when the incident took place.
They were near a hill when the lightning struck. Soumya was charred to death and the others suffered burns.
Hearing their cries, a cattle herder alerted the villagers.
They took the two women to Chengalpet government hospital where they were undergoing treatment.
Police said Sowmya, who had completed her Class XII, had applied to a college in city to pursue higher studies. Police have registered a case of accidental death.
