CHENNAI: This year only 30 students from Tamil Nadu have featured in the top 1,000 ranks in JEE (Advanced) exam when the results were declared on Friday. Experts said the performance of Tamil Nadu students was similar to last year’s.
Chennai student S Prajeeth, who secured all-India 33rd rank was the state topper. Last year, the top ranker had got the 51st rank at the national level.
Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, declared JEE (advanced) results on Friday. Because of heavy web traffic, the site remained down soon after the results in the morning; it was up again only after 5pm.
“Of the 1,61,319 candidates who appeared for JEE (Advanced) this year, 38,705 have qualified. Among them, 5,356 are female students,” IIT Roorkee said in a press release. Kartikey Gupta Chandresh from Maharashtra came on top this time. Tamil Nadu topper Prajeeth scored 293 out of 372. “I was preparing for JEE for the past four years. I plan to join either computer science or electrical at IIT Madras,” Prajeeth told TOI.
Sumedhan Ramesh, who got the 248th rank with 248 marks, has been preparing for the exam for two years. He said he would opt for electrical engineering at IIT Madras. Another TN student, Gaurav Prakash, who scored 245 and secured the 278th rank, plans to study computer science at IIT Madras.
“We have 24 students from our institute who came in the top 1,000,” said B Pavan Kumar, deputy director, FIITJEE, Chennai. The performance of Tamil Nadu students was more or less the same as last year,” he said. “Last year, the student with 1,000th rank secured 59% marks, while this year the student with 55% has secured the 1,000th rank.”
There are around 10,500 seats available in 23 IITs across the country. “When the total seats were around 10,000 last year, a student with 13,000th rank was able to get admission in IIT Bombay. Students have to be smart in choosing their course and campus,” said educational consultant D Nedunchezhiyan.
