PMK demands testing of all alcoholic beverages sold in TASMAC wine shops
CHENNAI: PMK founder S Ramadoss on Monday demanded the government to test all alcoholic beverages sold through TASMAC wine shops. The PMK leader's statement comes a day after a TOI report revealed that liquor sold in the state owned marketing corporation liquor outlets are not being subjected to random testing.
In a statement here, he said that it was unfortunate that alcoholic beverages sold in TASMAC wine shops were not tested in the last 14 years.
Noting that it has come to light that a particular variety of rum had (high levels of) tartaric acid against the prescribed limit only after testing, he said, there are possibilities of similar issues with other brands, as well.
It may be recalled that the TOI report said that a state-run food safety laboratory has declared that a bottle of rum sold at an TASMAC outlet in Koyembedu was of substandard quality after they found high levels of tartaric acid content. A test report by a Thanjavur-based Food Analysis Laboratory dated May 11 showed samples of the rum contained twice the tartaric acid against the prescribed limits.
