CHENNAI: Employees of various firms in the IT Park at Siruseri on OMR will soon be able to ride a bicycle or jog around on the campus to relieve stress. The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (SIPCOT), which maintains the IT Park, is reviving the Navalur tank by laying cycling and jogging tracks over the bund. While the tank will be desilted to increase storage capacity, the bund is set to be transformed into a recreational hub.

The state owned industries corporation has charted out the plan.
“We have decided to complete desilting of the tank spread over 40 acres in the Open Space Reserve area before November. The recreational facilities around it would be ready by March next year,” a SIPCOT official told TOI.
Official sources said the the tank , which is now 4.5 metres deep, would be deepened by another five feet and the earth excavated used to further raise the 3-metre-high bund. “On the one hand, we can desilt the tank to store excess water, while the bund can be further strengthened for laying the cycling and jogging track,” an official said, adding that employees can use the facilities after work. People in the neighbourhood can also utilise the facilities.
The 46 companies at the IT Park employ about 90,000 professionals, including 60,000 direct employees. The recent drought, which left the IT Park struggling for water, prompted the authorities to think of rejuvenating the water resources. The two million litres a day (MLD) required for the IT companies at the park Siruseri include 1 MLD from available wells and the rest from private water tankers.
SIPCOT sources said they were working to ensure the IT park is self-sufficient in distribution of water. The Nalvalur tank will come in handy because it can act as a major source to meet the requirements during next year’s summer. “In fact, we are also contemplating to introduce boat rides on the tank if adequate water can be stored,” the official said. The initiative would be expanded to the 18 other SIPCOT parks in Tamil Nadu gradually, he added.
