Swachhata Excellence Award 2019: Kumbakonam bags third prize

The Kumbakonam municipality in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu has bagged the third prize in the Swachhata Excellence Award 2019 instituted by the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) to recognise local bodies encouraging self-help groups (SHG) to achieve the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM).

TRICHY: The Kumbakonam municipality in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu has bagged the third prize in the Swachhata Excellence Award 2019 instituted by the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) to recognise local bodies encouraging self-help groups (SHG) to achieve the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM).
Raigarh and Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh bagged the first and second prizes of the award, respectively.

Improving the livelihood of SHGs and sanitary workers by involving them in various innovative activities was stated as the key objective by MoHUA to grab the award.
The Kumbakonam municipality, employing 80 self-help groups for information, education, and communication (IEC) activities to promote cleanliness among the public, helped around 6,000 SHG members to improve their socio-economic condition.
The civic body in December 2018 applied for the Swachhata Excellence Awards 2019. The Union ministry on Saturday awarded the third prize for Kumbakonam municipality in Swachhata Excellence Awards 2019 under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) category cities with population less than 10 lakh.
Kumbakonam is the first town in Tamil Nadu to bag the award that was instituted last year.
“The income earning capacity of the SHG members and sanitary workers with us were improved by providing them constant employment under the Swachh Bharat Mission programmes. It helped us to bag the award," commissioner of Kumbakonam municipality K Uma Maheswari told TOI.
