CHENNAI:
Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday requested the public to extend support to the
plastic ban being enforced by the government from January 1 onwards.
He held a review meeting at the secretariat with the ministers and heads of various departments on the action taken against violations.
“The general public should make use of alternative products to plastic and help the state government in its efforts to preserve the environment,” an official release quoting the chief minister said.
The meeting discussed the
penalty imposed on establishments and cancelling their licences for the violations. The departments were directed to encourage the public to use alternative products and take action against violators.
The state has fixed the penalty for the first-time offence of storage, supply, transport, sale and distribution of use and throwaway plastics at Rs 25,000. For the second-time offence, the penalty will be Rs 50,000 while it will be Rs 1 lakh for the third-time offence.
