CHENNAI: In what could be a threat to 150 MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu, the Chennai Metropolitan and Development Authority has asked the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco) to withdraw power to 14 blocks of Sri Muthukumar Group of Institutions, including seven blocks attached to the medical college.
The civic agency had issued lock, seal and demolition notice to the buildings in April as they did not have planning permission.
The letter from CMDA chairman Vikram Kapoor that was sent on July 30 said, the civic agency had initiated enforcement action against unauthorised buildings on the premises of Muthukumaran Educational Trust, Mangadu. The blocks housing library, doctors' quarters, hostels, college of nursing, and a public school were declared unauthorised. "It is requested to take immediate action to disconnect the power supply to the listed buildings and the action taken report shall be sent to the CMDA," it said.
Last week, the college moved the court seeking directions to the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University to include the college in the MBBS seat matrix. University officials said they were not able to add it as a college with unapproved buildings cannot be given affiliation.
On July 25, health secretary Beela Rajesh wrote to the university vice-chancellor Dr Sudha Seshayyan stating the university must consider taking "appropriate decision" to include the college in the seat matrix. The health department has sent a team to inspect the campus and found they had alternate locations for library, doctor's quarters and boy's hostels. They had identified locations for ladies' hostel and nursing quarters, but were awaiting CMDA approval.
Directorate of medical education officials said the state was keen on including the 150 MBBS seats this year, but the selection panel will not be able to do it without the university's nod. Last week, the college moved the court asking for a direction to be included in the seat matrix. Simultaneously a PIL was filed against the college. A senior official from the medical college refused to speak as the case is pending in court.
