A six-year-old girl, a UKG student at a private school, died after fire from an earthen lamp spread to her clothes when she was playing at her house at Kakkalur near Tiruvallur.

CHENNAI: A six-year-old girl, a UKG student at a private school, died after fire from an earthen lamp spread to her clothes when she was playing at her house at Kakkalur near Tiruvallur.
Police said K Rithika, a resident of New Town area in Kakkalur, was playing at her house on Friday when fire from an earthen lamp spread to her dress. As the girl screamed for help her parents and neighbours came to her rescue.
They poured sand and water on her to stop fire. They rushed the girl to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital after giving first-aid at a government hospital in Tiruvallur.
However, Rithika died of burns at the KMC hospital. Police have registered a case.
