CHENNAI: A minivan ran over and killed a man sleeping on the pavement at Acharapakkam in Kancheepuram on Thursday morning. His wife escaped with injuries.
The vehicle was going from the airport, was heading to Perambalur when the accident took place.
G Arun, 26, and his wife A Muthaal, 25, from Thenpakkam at Acharapakkam, were sleeping on the pavement at the bus stop. The couple run a small eatery in the locality.
Around 6am, a speeding car toppled and ran into the pavement after one of the front tyres burst. Arun who came under the vehicle died on the spot.
The three occupants in the minivan including the driver escaped with injuries. Passersby pulled them out of the car. They were sent to the Chengalpet Government Hospital.
The driver, Rajesh, was admitted to Kancheepuram Government Hospital. Police said Rajesh had gone to pick up Sahul Hameed, 52, and Mohammad, 38, who arrived from Dubai.
Police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence and seized the vehicle. Rajesh told police he lost control due to the tyre burst.
“Since it was early in the morning and the road was also free, the driver was over-speeding, due to which he couldn’t bring the vehicle under control,” said an investigating officer.
