CHENNAI: The Madras high court on Monday ordered notice to the state government on a plea seeking to provide special reservation for the
transgender community in appointments made to government posts.
Justice S Vimala passed the order on the plea moved by P Sudha, a
transsexual and resident of Chennai.
According to the petitioner, reservation is provided for upliftment of certain communities and women in some cases as they were oppressed and denied equal opportunities for over several decades.
Though transsexuals are considered as a third gender, that too after the intervention of the court, no proper welfare is being provided by the state for their upliftment or empowerment. This community is in constant battle with the oppression and discrimination from all sections of the society, the petitioner said.
Therefore, providing reservation to the community is the need of the hour which has been insisted by the Supreme Court in many cases, the petitioner added.
Noting that such reservation could change the face of the entire community, the petitioner wanted the court to direct the state to come up with a policy to provide reservation to the community as a special case in government appointments.
