CHENNAI: A 36-year-old woman and her two daughters attempted to kill themselves with sleeping pills on Thursday after the Sathangadu police station allegedly threatened to file a false case against them.
V Bharat Lal had had a quarrel with his neighbour Anna Sundari over money she had borrowed from him. He alleged that he was picked up by the Sathangadu police in June and was threatened at the behest of the home guard.
“On 19 June, my family was taken to the police station where we were kept from 3pm to 11pm. They threatened to book my daughter for prostitution,” he said.
On 2 July, he filed a complaint at the commissioner’s office, saying police took Rs 3,000 from him and had asked him to vacate the house.
Depressed over this, Bharat Lal’s wife Raaki and two daughters Jamuna, 21 and Monisha, 16, decided to end their lives.
