CHENNAI: Police on Monday arrested a crime wing inspector arrested for taking Rs 3,000 from a salesperson for not foisting a snatching case against him. A court later sent Bhooma Devi to the Puzhal prison.
A team of directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DV&AC) officials caught the 2004-batch direct sub-inspector while accepting the bribe from S Kannan at her office in Adambakkam police station.

Police said Kannan, a salesperson with a private mobile service provider, was caught by a Bhooma Devi-led team 20 days ago for not having the original documents, including his driving licence, while riding his two-wheeler. His bike was seized.
Later, when Kannan went to the police station with the original papers, Bhooma Devi, who was in charge as the regular L&O inspector was on leave, refused to release the bike. Kannan then got a call from the police station and was asked to appear before the police inspector for inquiry in connection with a robbery case. He went to the station, again carrying the original documents of his vehicle, when Bhooma Devi demanded Rs 3,000. Shocked, he said he ready to give Rs 500, but she was not willing to budge. Claiming that the printer in the station was on the blink and that she could not issue him a release order, she said she could ride it away immediately if he gave the sum she demanded. She even threatened to slap a robbery case on him, he told police.
Since then, a police officer said, Kannan began getting threatening from the woman officer, demanding that he pay the bribe. Kannan lodged a compaint with the DV&AC. As instructed by officials, he went to the police station on Monday with the cash laced with chemicals. As soon as Bhooma Devi accepted the money, the waiting police team entered and caught her.
Police sources said Bhooma Devi was a crime inspector attached to the Selaiyur police station earlier and was transferred to Adambakkam station four months ago. During her 10-day tenure as in-charge of law & order, she sat in the room occupied by the law & order officer. This, the sources said, is against rules.
