Dehradun: 1 killed, 4 rescued after jeep washes away in Bandal river

DEHRADUN: A 45-year-old woman was killed on Sunday after being swept away in the Bandal river, which has swollen following heavy downpour in the district. The incident took place when the victim and her kin, on-board an open jeep, were trying to cross the river in Maldevta area of Dehradun. The deceased has been identified as Neetu Lohiya, a resident of Jakhan area of the city.Her body was recovered from Song river about 500 metres downstream from the spot where the incident took place.
While Neetu got swept away, a police team was able to rescue the other four occupants of the jeep with the help of locals. "A police team led by me reached the spot with necessary equipment and started the rescue operation after locals informed us that a jeep carrying five persons is stuck in the Bandal river," added Rawat. According to police, the jeep got stuck in the middle of the river due to strong water current and subsequently turned turtle throwing everyone in the jeep into the gushing waters.
"The family had ventured out on a getaway in Maldevta area on Sunday. During their journey they decided to cross the Bandal river on their jeep just for the sake of an adventure. As the river is already in spate following heavy rains, their misadventure turned fatal for the woman," sub-inspector Manohar Singh Rawat, who led the rescue operation, told TOI.
The body has been kept in the mortuary for paper formalities and will soon be handed over to the family, informed an official.
