4th Uttarakhand Olympic Games concludes in Rudrapur
Over 5,000 athletes from 13 districts participated in the four day-long event that featured 25 sports
RUDRAPUR : The fourth installment of Uttarakhand Olympic Games concluded on Tuesday with the disembarkation of Olympic flag and a farewell march past in Rudrapur. Over 5000 athletes from 13 districts participated in the four day-long sport spectacle that featured 25 sports.
The closing ceremony of the event saw women band from the Provincial Armed Constabulary performing at the district sports stadium.
The glittering ceremony was jointly chaired by the treasurer of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Anandeshwar Pandey and district magistrate (DM), Neeraj Kharwal.
Dehradun, with the largest contingent, managed to win several individual and team sports. UOA general secretary, DK Singh, talking to TOI, said, "We have yet not been able to compile the medal tally as the sports were played in four different cities with several venues. However, in men's hockey, men's handball, women's handball and women's basketball, Dehradun defeated Udham Singh Nagar, Bagehswar, Paudi and Pithoragarh in the finals respectively. Dehradun lost to Haridwar in men's basketball final match. Almora's Rahul Bisht won gold in 100 meter sprint while Udham Singh Nagar's relay team won gold in 4X400 meter race". The final results and the medal tally will be announced on Tuesday morning, Singh said.
IOA treasurer Pandey also bestowed praise on the athletes from the state. “It is the result of the labour of the players and the support from the state government that today the young talents have emerged from all across this small hilly state. IOA with its state unit will make required efforts to take Uttarakhand to the next level of sporting excellence,” said Pandey.
DM Kharwal said that such sports event shall be organised every year in the district so that more players emerge and bring glory to the district at state, national and international levels. DK Singh distributed mementos to the players for individual outstanding performances while a scooty was presented to disabled athlete, Sanjay Kumar.
Earlier, during the launch of the event on November 10, general secretary of IOA, Rajeev Mehta had said, “The state has got tremendous sporting talent. We are providing a platform and proper guidance to the budding talents from Uttarakhand.”
