After SC order, Subharti Medical College sealed
Dehradun: A day after the Supreme Court directed the state government to take over the privately owned Shridev Suman Subharti Medical College, Dehradun police sealed the institution on Friday. The state government also appointed principal of Government Doon Medical College and Hospital (GDMCH), Naveen Thapliyal, as acting principal of Subharti.
Talking to TOI, Dr K K Tamta, medical superintendent of GDMCH, who has been appointed medical superintendent of Shridev Suman Subharti Medical College said, “We have inspected the campus and noted down what facilities are available in the hospital.
We will send a report to the government describing things that are required to make it an institution as per standards.”
The Supreme Court had asked the Uttarakhand government on Thursday to take over the land, building and assets of privately owned Shridev Suman Subharti Medical College within 24 hours and run it as a government medical college. The order was passed after a writ petition was filed by 74 medical students (all NEET pass-outs) who complained that Subharti Trust had defaulted in its responsibilities including obtaining necessary affiliation and permissions from the Medical Council of India. Legal experts said that this was the first time that the apex court had asked a state government to take over a private college.
