DEHRADUN: Doctors at a city-based private hospital managed to extract several razor blades, iron nails, and hair pins from a 30-year-old man’s abdomen by using a deft endoscopic procedure to avoid surgery. The entire process took less than an hour after which the patient was declared “out of danger”.
The patient was a severe alcoholic and drug addict, doctors told.
Gastroenterologist Dr Mayank Gupta informed that the patient was brought in the emergency ward of the hospital with the complaint of severe abdominal pain. His relatives guess that he might have swallowed these sharp objects while no one was around.
“Investigations showed multiple foreign bodies, including three portions of razor, four nails, and a hairpin, in the small intestine of the patient. These objects are difficult to remove endoscopically and usually require open surgery. We immediately evaluated the situation and within one hour, the foreign bodies were successfully removed,” said Dr Gupta.
“This particular case was challenging because the foreign bodies were in the small intestine, which has a lot of curves, and foreign bodies were very sharp and pointed which could have caused damage to the gut wall. There is a very high risk of perforation while removing such objects,” said Dr Ravikant Gupta, Medical Director and HoD of the private hospital.
