DEHRADUN: In a bid to check the stray
cattle menace,
Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) on Saturday ordered all cattle owners to get their livestock registered with the
civic body.
The move comes after several complaints regarding accidents and problems caused due to stray cattle which were received by the DMC. The city municipal commissioner had earlier ordered the senior veterinary officer Vivekanand Sati to ensure that all the stray animals and cattle are moved out of the city limits.
Officials say that while the drive to move cattle out of city limits is ongoing, the new order will help fix responsibility if cattle are found on the streets of the city. “Each cattle will be registered and we will have the name of the owner with us. This will help the officials find out the owner of the cattle. Even infant cattle will be registered so that none are missed out,” Sati said.
The DMC estimates the number of cattle in the city to be around 2500. However, officials say that the actual number will be known only after the registration is done. “We still do not have the data for stray cattle in the city. Once the registration of the owned cattle is done, we will get on with the abandoned ones which pose a much bigger threat to pedestrians as well as motorbike and scooter riders,” said DMC commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey.
