DEHRADUN: It’s been over 48 hours since the minor, accused of murdering her mother in 2018, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Balika Niketan in Kedarpuram area of Dehradun, but nobody from her family has come forward to claim the body.
According to police, the father of the deceased has refused to come to Dehradun to cremate her body. The girl was found “hanging from the door handle” of a toilet at Balika Niketan on Wednesday evening.
The father, who works as a labourer in Punjab, had “disowned” his daughter and kept no connection with her since her arrest in 2018 on charges of killing her mother, who was allegedly forcing her into “prostitution”.

Shweta Choubey, superintendent of police (city), said, “After her death, police informed her father who lives in Rupnagar, Punjab, and asked him to come to Dehradun to claim the body. However, he refused to come here, saying that he had nothing to do with her.”
Police are now in a fix over the final rituals and the body is still lying in the mortuary of Doon Hospital.
The SP (city) added, “According to the rules, police have to wait for 72 hours for family members to claim the body. If nobody comes by then, police are authorised to perform the last rites.”
