DEHRADUN:
Dehradun police has announced that just like previous years, kanwarias will not be allowed to enter
Mussoorie this year during the
kanwar yatra, which is scheduled to start from July 17.
During this year’s kanwar yatra,
Uttarakhand police has estimated a record turnout of 3 crore saffron-clad pilgrims, who usually venture out to other tourist destinations in other parts of Uttarakhand, including Mussoorie, after visiting Haridwar and Rishikesh.
Nivedita Kukreti, Dehradun senior superintendent of police (SSP), told TOI, “Like previous years, police are not going to allow kanwarias in Mussoorie. The entry of their multi-storied trucks and other vehicles, in which they usually travel, will not be allowed to enter the
hill station.”
Kukreti added that anyone wants to visit Mussoorie as tourist will not be stopped, but kanwarias prefer to travel in groups on their open trucks, which will not be permitted.
In 2007, police had banned the entry of kanwarias in Mussoorie following incidents of scuffle with regular tourists and locals.
