Light Rail Transit project in pipeline for U’khand

Light Rail Transit project in pipeline for U’khand
Dehradun: After a technical committee found that a metro rail project was not conducive for Dehradun and Haridwar, plans are afoot to introduce Light Rail Transit (LRT) of either one or two coaches for the two cities.
Soon after chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said recently that the metro project was not a feasible option, urban development minister and state government spokesperson Madan Kaushik said, “We are now planning LRT for Dehradun and Haridwar.
If required, we will also introduce podcars in the two cities.” According to sources, a major factor behind metro not being feasible in the state capital was the width of the roads in the city. It was concluded that erecting pillars for the project in the narrow roads was not possible.
The sources said that a comprehensive mobility plan for the LRT project has been prepared and handed over to the state government for further study. A consultant is now preparing an alternative analysis and the report is expected by January-end, the sources added.
When contacted, Jitendra Tyagi, managing director, Uttarakhand Metro Rail, told TOI, “The LRT project is planned to be constructed on an elevated track supported by pillars. The size of pillars required for LRT is smaller than that required for a metro.”
It is estimated that a km of metro project would cost around Rs 250 crore while LRT would cost almost half the amount (Rs 140 crore) for the same distance. A podcar or ropeway is cheaper and would cost around Rs 60 crore per km, officials said.
