ROORKEE: A day after the honour killing of a 16-year-old girl in Jhabradi Kalan village of Haridwar district came to light, police, on Sunday evening, nabbed victim’s father for killing his daughter. The arrested accused and his brother had fled the village to escape the clutches of law immediately after cremating their daughter and while victim’s uncle still remains at large, her father has confessed to his crime.
Speaking to TOI, Janmaijai Prabhakar Khanduri, SSP Haridwar, said, “Acting swiftly on a tip-off, we nabbed the accused near Lathar Deva crossing.
He has confessed that he killed his daughter as he was upset over her affair with a youth of lower caste. He and his brother thrashed the victim and then strangulated her to death. The two immediately cremated the girl so as to hide their crime.” A manhunt has been launched for the victim’s uncle, the official added.
Notably, on Friday, the victim, a student of Class IX, was killed at her home. The kin of the deceased cremated her the next morning. On receiving information of the incident from the villagers, police rushed to the crematorium but till then her remains were consigned to flames. Thereafter, Jhabradi Kalan police had lodged a case against victim’s father and her paternal uncle under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code.
