DEHRADUN: Police on Wednesday filed cases against three people after a 30-year-old mentally ill woman in labour was admitted in Government Doon Medical College & Hospital by a city-based social worker. The woman was lying under a flyover in Selaqui when she was spotted by the social activist.
According to Usha Negi, chairperson, Uttarakhand Commission for Protection of Child Rights (USCPCR), who visited her on Wednesday, the woman was raped.
“The woman is mentally ill and a drug addict too. She couldn’t have consented to a physical relationship and therefore it looks like she was raped,” Negi said.
Police officials said that the woman hasn’t been able to tell them much. “There are three suspects in the case and we are trying to trace them,” said Vijay Singh, SHO, Sahaspur. The accused have been booked under sections 376 (rape) and 120b (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
Both Negi and the police said that the only way now to identify the biological father of the child would be to conduct a DNA test. “We are waiting for the delivery. Once that is done, we will conduct DNA tests and it will most certainly tell us who the father is,” Negi said.
