Dehradun: As heat wave continues to sweep north India, with state capital Dehradun, too, sizzling under the scorching sun as the mercury crossed the 40 degrees Celsius mark on Friday, a first this season. According to the regional meteorological centre, the maximum temperature in Dehradun on Friday was recorded at 40.4 degrees Celsius, almost five notches above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 22 degrees Celsius.
Jolly Grant, on the outskirts of Dehradun, recorded the maximum temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius on Friday.
“The maximum temperature was 40.4 degree Celsius in Dehradun on Friday, which is the highest for the season so far. The mercury was hovering in 'late 30s' for the past few days but it crossed the 40-degrees-mark on Friday,” said Bikram Singh, director of regional meteorological centre.
Several other cities in the plain areas of the state are also reeling under severe heat wave, with day’s temperature in Kotdwar, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar settling above 40 degrees Celsius.
Even the hills are witnessing warm conditions with temperatures hovering in 'mid-thirties'. In Almora, the maximum temperature recorded on Friday was 36.3 degrees Celsius, while it was 32.4 degrees Celsius in Pithoragarh. The hill town of Mukteshwar recorded the maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius.
The regional meteorological centre has, however, predicted that there would be some respite from the heat, with rain and thunderstorm likely to hit parts of the Himalayan state between June 2 and 3. A yellow warning has been issued for lightning and thunder squall with winds reaching up to 70 kmph in some isolated places of Uttarakhand on June 2 and 3.
“The weather will start changing from the night of June 1. Light showers are also expected at isolated places during the next couple of days. The mercury will also come down to normal following the spell of rain,” said Bikram Singh.
