DEHRADUN: Traffic offenders in Doon will no longer be made to roam the traffic department’s offices to pay their fines.
Dehradun police on Thursday were finally provided with handheld e-challan machines which would help the people pay their fines on the spot and even take the cashless route.
Dehradun SSP, Arun Mohan Joshi, distributed 136 e-challan machines to city’s traffic police saying that the initiative is a step by the police to go digital in the near future.
“We have already gone digital in filing FIRs and chargesheets. Paying challans was the one avenue where we were lagging behind and people would have to come to traffic department’s office to pay the challans. The e-challan system will not only reduce the paperwork and other steps but will also benefit common people,” he said.
The data for the number of challans issued as well as the details of driving license of the offenders will be saved in the police server. Police officials said that this would help them in extracting information of an offender with much ease and make the system hassle-free.
Though at present, the offenders can only pay by using Paytm and cash, police said they are also planning to introduce several other online platforms as well as credit and debit card payment methods. “This is just the first step. Soon, we will get the feedback and changes will be made in the process,” Joshi said.
Commuters who were fined with the new system on the first day acknowledged that things were much easier and hassle-free. “I was fined Rs 100 which I paid in cash. Now, at least I don’t have to go to the traffic department to deposit a paltry amount of Rs 100. The introduction of e-challan has made the entire process very easy,” said Arun Kumar, who was fined at Dilaram Bazaar for driving a vehicle without number plate.
