DEHRADUM: The
Dehradun Municipal Corporation (
DMC) will buy 10 specially-equipped vacuum cleaners to fight dust in the city. The machines, called Jatayu, will be mounted on mini-trucks to clean roads. The cost of each machine is estimated at Rs 15 lakh.
According to officials of the DMC, the machine has proved to be highly effective against dust in pilot runs conducted in the city. “We tested the cleaning machine in Jakhan and the results were impressive.
The machine worked for over eight hours without a glitch,” said additional municipal commissioner Neeraj Joshi.
He added that the machine has enough suction power to lift even things like
coconut, glass and bottles.
Notably, the city produces 350 metric tonnes of waste every day and proper management of waste is a pressing problem.
