DEHRADUN: Six people were killed while four others were injured after boulders fell on a mini-van carrying the victims near Teen Dhara area of Devprayag in Uttarakhand's Tehri Garhwal district on Saturday. The vehicle was travelling from Rishikesh to Srinagar in Pauri Garhwal.
According to the district administration, while the identities of the dead and injured are yet to be ascertained, chances are that they are from Punjab since the vehicle has a Punjab registration number.
"We were informed by the locals about the accident and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), as well as police, was rushed to the spot. While five people were declared dead on the spot, three were critical and two had sustained minor injuries," said Tehri Garhwal district magistrate V Shanmugam.
The injured have been taken to the Community Hospital in Devaprayag for preliminary treatment. "During treatment, one of the persons who was critical died, so the death toll has risen to six so far and two are still critical. They have been sent to AIIMS in Rishikesh," Shanmugam added.
SDRF officials, meanwhile, said that the rescue operation was delayed because of adverse weather conditions. "We wanted to airlift the injured but because of bad weather, deploying a chopper wasn’t a viable option. The rains also affected the rescue operations and the injured were finally sent via road," an official said.
