NEW DELHI: The Public Works Department (PWD) has planned to construct foot overbridges (FOBs) at three spots which are infamous for accidents. The FOBs will be built at Monastery Market near Kashmere Gate, National Highway (NH-10) and Shiv Parvati Mandir on Mehrauli–Badarpur (MB) Road. In a recently held meeting, PWD gave nod to the project and also sanctioned the budget for carrying out constructions.
The total estimated budget for construction of these footbridges is Rs 10 crore, and once the work begins, it will take less than a year to complete.

Officials said that these stretches are among the most used roads. Due to non-availability of an alternative option, commuters are forced to risk their lives and limbs to cross the busy roads. The situation worsens during peak hours because of the increased numbers of vehicles crossing the routes.
“Apart from being vulnerable to road accidents, these sections also often witness traffic tangles. Hence, the PWD has decided to construct these three FOBs to ensure safety and security of the passengers,” said an official. “The department has received the financial approval for carrying out the work. Engineers concerned are working on the designs, and the work will begin soon,” he added.
The estimated budget of the footbridge that will be constructed with staircase and lift for pedestrians on Multan Nagar Metro Pillar No. 224 to 225 at Delhi Rohtak Road on NH-10 is Rs 3.77 crores. The footbridge near Shiv Parvati Mandir on MB Road is expected to cost Rs 2.6 crore while the FOB at Monastery Market will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore.
The estimate expense may go up, the official added. More than 3,000 pedestrians cross each of these roads during the daytime.

“It is good that the PWD is constructing footbridges as that would help in better traffic arrangement. There are 10 black spots in the city where pedestrians are always at the risk of meeting with accidents while crossing the busy roads. Absence of footbridges there is mainly to blame,” said an official.
“Currently, there are as many as 50 subways and 73 footbridges located in different parts of Delhi for the safety of pedestrians. Further, the PWD is also set to construct 17 footbridges in other accident- prone areas across the city under the mass traffic de-congestion project to ease the movement of pedestrians,” the official added.
The FOBs will be constructed with staircases, CCTV cameras to monitor the criminal activities, and lifts.
