NEW DELHI: Three criminals out to kill their rival, who had been extorting from them to let them run an illegal liquor business, have been arrested by the Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Crime Branch.
The arrested men — Rahul (23), Govinder (23) and Sunil (23) — are residents of west Delhi’s Nangloi. The kingpin of the gang, Rahul, had been paying Rs 50,000 each month to a Haryana-based criminal, but difference arose between them when the latter doubled the protection money.
“We have seized three 7.65mm calibre pistols and 15 cartridges from them,” said DCP (Crime) Joy Tirkey.
The AHTU got a tip-off about the three criminals being at end stage of committing the murder after which a team led by ACO Surender Gulia and sub-inspector Virender Tyagi laid a trap and apprehended them from DSIDC Complex in Mangolpuri.
During interrogation, the trio told the police that they used to smuggle illegal liquor and several cases have been registered against them under Excise Act. The three are friends from school and had taken to crime a few years ago.
A criminal, Satish Bhadani from Jhajjar in Haryana, had been extorting from this gang for allowing them to smuggle Haryana-made liquor to Delhi. Last month, Rahul refused to pay him after which Satish and his gang got outraged.
A few days ago, Satish and two of his gang members, Johnny and Sunny, reached Rahul’s house and threatened him. They misbehaved with his family members and threatened to murder them. Rahul then procured three pistols from an arms supplier, Sonu, a resident of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Before he could carry out his plan to kill Satish, he and his associates were arrested.
In the past three years, four cases of bootlegging were registered against Rahul at Nihal Vihar, Kanjhawala, Crime Branch and Narela police stations. Govinder was booked in an attempt to murder case in 2017. Sunil has three criminal cases lodged against him.
