NEW DELHI: Three children—two boys and a girl—kidnapped from a colony near Khizrabad in south Delhi were rescued from Ludhiana. The kidnapper was arrested.
The children, who were cousins, went missing from their house on Sunday evening after which their family members went to the police. A protest was also held outside the New Friends’ Colony police station.
“We formed a team led by SHO Rajesh Mishra and SI Vishnu to scan through CCTV feeds from the area.
Here we spotted the suspect along with the children,” said additional DCP (southeast) Hareesh H P.
The kidnapper was identified as Ganesh Mehto, who had locked up the children in a house at a JJ colony in Ludhiana. He allegedly touched the 10-year-old girl inappropriately too.
Based on several other camera feeds from the area, police figured out how Mehto lured the children away. He was also seen stopping near a shack on the way to change his clothes before accompanying the children ahead.
They then boarded a train from Sarai Kale Khan railway station and got down at Pathankot. “It became a challenge for the team after this, since the accused neither switched on his mobile phone nor did he have a relative or a friend through whom we could reach him,” said a police officer.

A police team was sent to Pathankot where a door-to-door search was conducted. During that, police learnt that Mehto travelled to Ludhiana with the children after spending a day in Pathankot at a hotel.
The team then went to Ludhiana and tracked Mehto down to a shack at a JJ colony. He had taken up a job at a construction site and would lock up the children in the house during the day. At night he would return and try to force himself on the girl. But the two boys aged 8 and 10 managed to fight him back a few times.
The children said Mehto had promised to take them to the hills but took them to Ludhiana instead. He didn’t let them speak to their families and even broke his cellphone. His plan was to rape the girl and sell off the boys. A POCSO case was registered.
