NEW DELHI: A scuffle broke out between three municipal councillors and their husbands on the dais in full public view just before the public meeting on unauthorised colonies was to begin in northwest Delhi’s Kirari assembly segment on Sunday.
The fight between the councillors forced former Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay, who was deputed by the party leadership to address the public meeting, to make a hasty retreat within minutes of reaching the venue.
Sources said the meeting had to be abandoned midway.
Sources said the argument between three women councillors of the ruling party in North Delhi Municipal Corporation and their husbands, including a former MLA and an ex-officebearer of the district, started when Upadhyay was being welcomed by those present on the stage.
“The argument suddenly turned violent and the women functionaries started dragging each other by hair in full public view. Soon, their husbands also joined in the fisticuff,” said a party functionary, requesting anonymity. The northwest Delhi police confirmed that separate complaints had been filed by at least two different groups and the matter was being investigated.
Upadhyay confirmed that he left the meeting when the fight started. “I left the venue as soon as the fight began. I will give my report to the party leadership soon,” he said. Delhi media in-charge Pratyush Kanth said the senior party leaders had got the report of the incident. “Any activity, which demeans the party and its reputation, will not be tolerated by the party leadership,” he said.
