NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Singh, ND Gupta and Sushil Gupta on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Union home minister Amit Shah over the rising crime graph in Delhi and urged him to look into the situation and take effective steps. The MPs wrote: “Crime in Delhi is increasing by the day. Loot and murder on the streets of Delhi are being reported. There is no fear of police among criminals.
People do not feel safe even on the streets (sic).”
Referring to a shooting incident in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka last month, Sanjay Singh said that a video of the crime that had gone viral showed that criminals had no fear of police or the law. “The criminals stopped a moving car on the road and sprayed it with bullets. In June alone, 43 shooting incidents took place on the streets of the city and 243 rounds were fired, leaving 16 people dead,” Singh added.
Singh also referred to an incident involving the wife of Vijender Gupta, leader of opposition in Delhi assembly. “Even the LoP’s wife is not safe, let alone the common man. At central Delhi’s Mandi House, two bikers stopped her car and snatched her bag. If this is the level of security for VIPs, then what should the people of Delhi feel about their security?” the MP asked.
The MPs stressed that, while in full states, the police were under the administrative control of the elected government, the ministry of home affairs held the reins in the national capital. One paragraph of the letter detailed the rising incidents of crime in Delhi and the MPs pointed out that the number of murders in the city had increased in 2018 by 3.25% compared with 2017.
They urged Shah to convene a meeting with the Delhi Police commissioner at the earliest and to take urgent steps to improve the capital’s law and order situation.
