NEW DELHI: A woman was prevented from killing herself after locking up her children in a room in Sangam Vihar in south Delhi on Thursday. She had hanged herself from the ceiling fan using her chunni but was detected by a neighbour and police broke into the house to cut her down before she died.
Vijay Kumar, DCP (south), said later that the police control room had received an urgent about a woman trying to commit suicide in B Block of Sangam Vihar.
A neighbour had spotted her through the windows and alerted the cops. A police team in the vicinity rushed to the house and was joined by a team from the Tigri police station.
The cops climbed up to the third-floor flat to find it locked from inside. However, they found a ventilator above the door and hurriedly asked a welder working in the neighbouring house to cut the grilles. This was accomplished within six minutes and the policemen entered the room. The woman was still alive and breathing weakly.
One of the policemen grabbed her feet while another got a knife from the kitchen, cut the chunni and lowered the woman. They called some neighbourhood women and ferried the woman to AIIMS Trauma Centre in the PCR can. She is currently undergoing treatment.
The cops discovered that the woman had locked her 16-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son in the second room of the house. They were released. A third child was at school at the time of the incident. The woman’s husband was informed about the incident.
“The staff has done something pious and humane by saving the woman’s life. We have commended them for their presence of mind,” said DCP Kumar. The cops had recently been sensitised on how to react to such situations.
