NEW DELHI: Before Diwali, the iconic Signature Bridge may glow at night offering a spectacular view to the visitors. The Delhi government has decided to permanently illuminate the entire structure of the bridge, which towers above the city’s skyline, to enhance its appearance so that it becomes more attractive at night and glows like similar iconic structures the world over. Currently, the 154-metre-tall pylon of the bridge is twice the height of Qutub Minar but it is not visible at night.
“Currently, the structure of the bridge does not have any permanent lighting.
It draws visitors in hordes in the day, but people do not enjoy the sight after the fall of darkness. A detailed project report will be prepared and submitted to the government for approval within two weeks. The bridge will be illuminated every night,” said a senior official.
The illumination work will be carried out by the Delhi Transport and Tourism Development Corporation.
From static to dynamic lighting, the DTTDC is likely to explore a wide range of possibilities of bridge illumination available the world over. The varieties of the illumination, however, will largely depend upon the structure of the bridge and will transform the night appearance of the entire structure.
“We are eyeing to complete the illumination project by mid-October,” said an official. The work to open the observatory deck on the top of the Signature Bridge is going on and is likely to be completed by June 30. After it is completed and opened for public the observatory deck, which will have the capacity to accommodate 50-60 people at a time, will give a perfect picture of the city from the sky. The AAP government is going to promote it as a sunrise and sunset point to attract tourists.

The government is working on a plan for the comprehensive development of the areas around Signature Bridge to be developed as a tourist hub. The beautification project includes horticulture work based on multiple themes, developing garden in the open places besides other works. Along with it all a tourist facilitation centre and a children’s park are among the works planned at the bottom of the bridge.
The government has also decided to develop a parking space near the Signature Bridge so that people who park the vehicles on the roads passing through the bridge when they stop for a selfie do not cause blockades for the movement of traffic. It is common to find dozens of such vehicles parked along the road passing through the bridge in the day and people taking pictures with the bridges.
“The parking lot will have a ramp to connect it to the main road passing through the bridge so that people can come and take pictures after parking their vehicles in the parking space,” said an official. The work for the development of the parking lot will soon begin and apart from the parking lot, we will also develop a cafeteria where people can relax and have a good time, an official said.
The bridge opened for traffic in November 2018.
