NEW DELHI: A mob went on the rampage in Mukherjee Nagar, north Delhi, clashing with policemen and smashing buses and private vehicles on Sunday night, after a video went around of a Gramin Sewa driver being dragged to the police station, beaten up and kicked on his head by a group of cops earlier in the day.
On Monday night, around 500 protesters from across Delhi began a dharna outside the Mukherjee Nagar police station, demanding the sacking of all cops involved in roughing up the driver.
The protest continued past midnight.
Three policemen have been suspended after the video showed them dealing with the situation unprofessionally, police commissioner Amulya Patnaik said.
A dozen people, including an ACP, whom the mob attacked, were injured in Sunday night’s violence and at least 12 vehicles targeted by the mob. Police have registered two FIRs based on complaints by the driver and the injured policemen.
The Union home ministry sought a report from the police commissioner regarding the incident after a senior BJP delegation met MoS (home) G Kishan Reddy.
Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the residence of the driver, Sarabjeet Singh. “The manner in which Singh was beaten up was most brutal and barbaric. I condemn this assault,” Kejriwal stated.
