NEW DELHI: Perhaps if not for the three tattoos on her arm, a woman’s murder would have remained a mystery and not seen a logical end that it did — life imprisonment and Rs 50,000 fine awarded to her killer.
In 2012, a headless body, chopped into pieces, was found near a drain, and its identification was proving to be a task. On examination, three tattoos were found on her right arm, which were later identified by her mother.
The mother deposed against the accused, who was the victim’s live-in partner.
It came on record before additional sessions judge Narinder Kumar that the live-in partner, Yogesh Sharma, had even filed a missing complaint with the police, claiming to be her husband.
The truth unravelled after police linked the body with the missing person’s report and proved the woman’s identity with the help of the tattoos. “From the photograph she (mother) proved that it depicted the chopped right hand of her daughter, Pooja, that had three tattoos — ‘PJ’, ‘Om’ and ‘YS’,” the judge observed.
On March 17, 2012, patrolling police official Rajbir found a bag containing a female dead body, which was chopped into eight pieces. The head, however, was missing. The age of the woman was gauged to be around 25 years. Cops also found male and female blood-stained clothes. at the spot.
Medical examination of the body parts showed that they all belonged to one woman and the death had supposedly occurred either on March 16 or March 17, 2012. But the woman’s identity was still posing a hurdle in the outcome of the case as the head could not be recovered.

During investigation, police found that Sharma had lodged a missing person’s report of the victim on March 18, 2012 claiming that she was missing since March 16. When officers visited Sharma’s factory to follow up on the matter, he tried to run away. He was apprehended with two other persons and arrested.
Police said that Sharma later confessed to the murder and led cops to the weapon. The court, therefore, held Sharma guilty of the murder, whereas his accomplice Vinay was awarded three years’ jail for destruction of evidence. The third accused was acquitted for want of evidence.
