Delhi: NGT’s no to new diesel cars for SPG

National Green Tribunal (NGT) has junked a plea asking for permission to register new diesel vehicles for the Special Protection Group (SPG) in Delhi. NGT stated that permissions could not be granted as it would be against the Supreme Court direction banning the registration of any new diesel vehicles in Delhi with an engine capacity of over 2,000cc.

NEW DELHI: National Green Tribunal (NGT) has junked a plea asking for permission to register new diesel vehicles for the Special Protection Group (SPG) in Delhi. NGT stated that permissions could not be granted as it would be against the Supreme Court direction banning the registration of any new diesel vehicles in Delhi with an engine capacity of over 2,000cc.
A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said while exceptions can be made in cases where public utility was involved, such orders could not continue to be passed forever so that it became a rule.

“Subsequently, the Supreme Court permitted (registration of) diesel vehicles in the category of private cars and SUVs with the engine capacity of 2000cc subject to certain conditions. The vehicles in question are not covered by the said category,” the green tribunal said.
“It was made clear that no such application will be entertained as doing so will be against the orders of the Supreme Court and this tribunal,” the bench added.
The tribunal also stated that such directions had been issued keeping in mind the high levels of air pollution in the capital, stating it could not pass conflicting orders.
