NEW DELHI: A 72-year-old man from Australia was targeted by snatchers near GK-II M-Block market, who fled with his handbag containing his essential medicines that he cannot acquire in India, among other belongings. The man had come to meet his daughter who is working here. A case of snatching has been registered and police are scanning through CCTV footage from the area to identify the criminals.
In his complaint, the victim told police that he had come to India on July 5 and stayed in a hotel in GK-II till July 13.
He had since shifted to a five-star hotel. He was at the M-Block market to get medicines from the pharmacies there. He had also planned to pay his internet bill and was carrying his Apple laptop and its charger.
Around 5pm on Wednesday, when he stepped out of an eatery, he heard a bike approaching him from behind. “I stepped aside to allow the two-wheeler to pass, but the bikers snatched my handbag from my shoulder and sped away,” he told police.
He was so shocked by the incident that he couldn’t cry out for help. He also couldn’t notice the registration number of the bike since the snatchers drove zigzag after taking his bag. However, he could recall that the criminals were aged between 20-25.
“I walked all the way to the main road and asked a passerby for help. However, as he couldn’t talk in English, he pointed me towards a police post nearby. I then told the policemen stationed there what had happened,” he said. The bag contained his MacBook Pro, medicines, Rs 1,000 cash and some clothes.
The victim borrowed a phone from the policemen to inform his daughter about the incident. An FIR was subsequently filed at CR Park police station. Multiple teams have been formed to nab the snatchers. The profiles of criminals active in the area are being scanned to identify them.
