NEW DELHI: A gang of burglars that broke into several showrooms at Connaught Place within a span of 10 days was busted on Sunday night.
They travelled in a hired cab, kept it at parking lots and broke into showrooms of high-end apparel brands in Inner Circle around 1am every second or third day. The stolen branded clothes were then supplied to small shopkeepers in south Delhi, who sold them at the original price.
Raju Paneerselvam, Sanjeev Kumar and Nandu Rawat were caught near Janpath after they were spotted in CCTV camera footage collected from some of the shops and the parking areas.
DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma said that while scanning through 20-25 CCTVs, it was found that thieves were using a Tata Indica with a yellow numberplate.
The police found that Nandu used to drive the car during the day. “A trap was laid around Connaught Place and a team spotted the car near Janpath. It was flagged down and searched during which the team found house-breaking equipment such as a big cutter and arrested all three,” said Verma.
Raju told cops that Sanjeev was an expert in breaking locks without making any noise. He would cut open locks using a cutter and open the shutters partially for the others to enter. They would dump the booty in the car and drive off to their hideout in south Delhi.
Raju, earlier involved in thefts around Malviya Nagar, Panchsheel and CR Park, also got caught in 2009 and met the two others in jail. In 2017, they were arrested in a burglary case in Rohini and shifted to new addresses in Sangam Vihar after their release. In April 2018, they met again and planned to work together.
Nandu used to supply the logistics while the recce was done by Sanjeev. Several branded attire, a Nikon camera and two aluminium trays have been recovered.
