NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Tuesday busted a cricket betting racket that was being run by stealing ornaments from jewellers in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh.
The accused, who worked as a courier for jewellers, would hold back pieces of gold ornaments during delivery assignments and promise customers that they would be delivered later.
This accused would then melt the jewellery into gold bricks, which would be used to pay off debts or for covering losses while placing the bets.
Two courier boys and a jeweller, who used to help the accused melt the gold, have been arrested. It was found that the accused had misappropriated over 25 kg of gold.
DCP (Central) Mandeep Randhawa said the men were identified as Bharat Nathmal, Sachin Shinde and Shravan. They were caught from different parts of the country and only a small portion of the gold has been recovered from them.
According to the cops, they received a call from one of the jewellers, who informed them about Nathmal, who worked as a transporter with him. The jeweller said that Nathmal was given some jewellery, which he was to transfer to a shop in Chandni Chowk, but it was not delivered. When Nathmal came to know that his employer had approached the police, he disappeared from his residence.
“We found that the accused kept changing his location. The team finally tracked him down to Rajasthan and arrested him,” said DCP Randhawa.

Nathmal told the cops that he had started a betting racket with a few of his friends. However, when he began suffering losses, he began stealing jewellery from his workplace. Along with Sachin and Shravan, Nathmal melted the stolen jewellery, before selling them off.
Police are trying to recover the rest of the stolen gold from the accused trio.
