NEW DELHI: The Special Cell on Tuesday arrested two men for allegedly trying to kill two women on the directions of a Mumbai-based gangster. One of the accused was shot at by police during an exchange of fire. The men were lying in wait for the women near a college in east Delhi when they were intercepted by the cops.
DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Yadav said that the team received information that the two men, Taj Mohammad and Liyakat Ali, were waiting near Jhilmil for the women to step out of their house.
A trap was laid near Shahdara on Tuesday morning.
The accused had allegedly acquired country-made weapons and stole a bike for a getaway. When the police team approached them, they tried to flee on the motorcycle.
The cops chased after the men and cornered them. Realising that they were trapped, both Mohammad and Ali opened fire at the police team. One round hit a cop on his bulletproof jacket. In the retaliatory fire, a bullet hit Mohammad's left leg.
"We caught both the men from the spot and seized two pistols and some rounds from them. The motorcycle was found to be stolen from Uttar Pradesh," said DCP Yadav.
Mohammad told the cops that he is a resident of Kalyanpur in UP and has been jailed twice under the Gangster Act in UP. He had roped in Liaqat to help him execute the murder. The cops are trying to identify the gangster who had offered the contract to kill the women.
