NEW DELHI: Two auto drivers were killed and another was seriously injured when a car hit their vehicles on GT Karnal Road near north Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar early on Monday.
The three had stopped near a bus stand looking for passengers when an SX4 driven by Mohit (23), a BA student and a businessman’s son, lost control and hit the autorickshaws from behind at 1.50am. Such was the impact that the autos were flung into a ditch.
Locals called up police after which Sanjay Donde and Jai Kishan were pulled out of their mangled autos and taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital.
They were then referred to JPN hospital where they died. The injured driver was identified as Jitender.
Police arrested Mohit, a resident of Bhairon Enclave in Palam, from the spot. No trace of alcohol was found in his body. He was later granted bail.
Return drive from Murthal turns tragic
Mohit, a BA third year student of IGNOU, was returning from Murthal when the accident took place. “We have registered a case of causing death due to negligence and negligent driving against Mohit and arrested him,” Gaurav Sharma, DCP (outer north), said. Mohit claimed to have spotted a left turn towards Burari at the last moment and lost control when he tried to negotiate it and hit the autos. However, Prem Singh, an eyewitness, said the car was being driven in a zigzag fashion.

The SX4 was sent for a mechanical examination to detect whether a defect had led to Mohit losing control.
The road doesn’t have enough markers for drivers going towards Burari, as a result of which they notice the turn at the last moment. There is no designated parking spot for autos due to which they are often stop at bus stands. The accident took place a few metres away from a police post from which cops had to rush out to save Mohit from being beaten up by a mob.
Jai Kishan, one of the deceased drivers, was the sole breadwinner in his family.
