NEW DELHI: The two men who were arrested by Special Cell after an encounter in west Delhi on Saturday night were on their way to murder a businessman, investigation has revealed.
During interrogation, the two men — Rahul Makkhi and Deepak Kaalu — revealed that they had been asking for protection money from a businessman, Sachin Goyal, but he had refused to cough up the money and sought help from police.
The criminals finally decided to kill him.
DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Yadav said Makkhi had a reward of Rs 50,000 on him. The duo are henchmen of gangster Lokesh Surya, who has become a headache for the police of Delhi and Haryana. Surya has been on a crime spree for the last six months with back-to-back extortion and murder cases.
On June 13, the gang had shot dead a businessman, Amit Kochar, at his Vikaspuri home when he refused to pay extortion money. A day before, the gang had entered the house of an elderly woman in Janakpuri and threatened to kill her son if he did not pay protection money.
The gang members had robbed Rs 15 lakh cash from a departmental store in Aslatpur locality in Janakpuri on April 29. On February 5, they had shot at an 18-year-old youth and injured him critically on the suspicion that he was ratting on them to their rivals.
Last December, the gang had tried to extort Rs 1 crore from a doctor in southwest Delhi. They had also snatched a Honda City at gunpoint, which they were travelling in when they were intercepted on Saturday by a Special Cell team led by ACP Sanjay Dutt and inspectors Sanjeev Kumar and Man Singh. This team had been tracking and arresting the members of this gang for the last three months.
“On Saturday, when the team flagged down the speeding Honda City, the criminals opened fire forcing the police officers to retaliate.
