FARIDABAD: A station house officer (SHO) and a local reporter were detained after an IPS officer — a deputy commissioner of police in Faridabad — committed suicide at his official residence in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving a suicide note in which he accused the SHO of blackmailing him.
Vikram Kapoor allegedly shot himself with his service revolver in the living room at Police Lines at 6am when his wife and elder son were asleep (Kapoor’s other son lives in Panchkula).
In a note, the 58-year-old, a promotee who was due to retire next year, accused Bhupani police station SHO Abdul Shahid of “blackmailing” him to frame him in “a false case” for the past one and a half months.
“I am doing this due to Abdul... he was blackmailing — Vikram,” the note said.
Faridabad DCP’s family jolted awake by gunshots
Sube Singh, PRO, Faridabad police, confirmed the contents of the note. “Police have recovered the suicide note in which the DCP has named the SHO. An FIR has been registered against the SHO and another person,” he said.
The other person is Satish Malik, who sources identified as a local reporter. Asked about the false case, a senior police officer said, “A probe is on to ascertain it.” Malik is associated with a local paper, Majdoor Morcha, which had run a couple of articles two months ago making certain accusations against the DCP. Malik and Shahid have been booked for abetment of suicide.

An early riser, Kapoor got up at 5am every day. Wednesday was no different. After he woke up, Kapoor had received a phone from an “SHO” around 5.45am, police sources said. The call woke his wife up. When she asked, Kapoor said an SHO had called to inform him about an incident at SDM Nagar.
Around 15 minutes later, Kappor’s wife and son were jolted awake by the sound of a gunshot. It came from the drawing room where they found him lying on the floor, blood oozing from his head. Police said Kapoor had put the gun’s barrel inside his mouth and pulled the trigger. The top of his head had an exit wound.
Inquiries have revealed that Kapoor, who would normally not keep his service revolver with him all the time, had started doing so for the past 15 days or so.
“Around 10.30pm on Tuesday, Kapoor had spoken with his sister, who lives in Delhi, and told her he won’t be able to come for Rakshabhandan on August 15 since he had a departmental function on Independence Day. He had told his sister he would send somebody to collect the rakhi from her residence around 8am on Wednesday,” a source said.
Known to be a cheerful and helpful police officer, the circumstances that appear to have driven Kapoor to suicide have stunned his family, friends and colleagues. “We can’t believe he took his own life. I spoke to him just two days ago and it was a casual conversation,” said Rajan Kapoor, the DCP’s son who works in Panchkula.
A religious person, he used to visit a temple in Hodal every month and organise a langar there. He would perform puja every day. “He was one of the most approachable police officers. Even though he was a DCP, he had a rapport with all. Every one used to respect him,” said Sandeep Singhal, his friend.
“Stunned by the development! Shri Vikram Kapur, IPS, was a brave colleague. Cheerful, composed and committed to his work. RIP,” OP Singh, additional DGP of Haryana and special officer to the chief minister, tweeted.
