PORVORIM: After the House was adjourned on the second day of the monsoon session on Friday, Congress argued that in the interest of people’s health, the speaker ought to have permitted discussion on formalin in fish.
Leader of opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar said, “They cooperated with the business advisory committee when it curtailed the sitting of the budget session due to the ill health of the chief minister.” Kavlekar argued that in a similar manner speaker Pramod Sawant should have allowed discussion on the formalin in fish issue as it pertains to the health of the people of Goa.

Former chief minister Luizinho Faleiro said the government ought to answer what happened to the 20-odd trucks carrying fish that tested positive for formalin. “When it comes to mangoes and other fruits that are artificially ripened, the FDA destroys them immediately. Have they taken any action in this regard? The question is being raised by one and all,” said Faleiro, alleging this is an attempt to protect the fish mafia.
Taleigao MLA Jennifer Monserrate said when pregnant women eat fish contaminated with formalin, it will be harmful for the baby. “The mother-to-be may also have a miscarriage,” she said.
For refusing to grant their request for a discussion on the hot issue, the opposition leader said the government is shying away from replying to questions raised by them.
