PANAJI: The mercury jumped to 36°C, nearly three degrees above normal, on Friday and remained there over the weekend, as the scorching heat continued to cause discomfort ahead of the onset of winter. The maximum temperature of 36°C recorded in the last two days is the highest in the post-monsoon season so far.
Day temperatures in November have been on the higher side, with the mercury hovering around 35°C for most of the time.
But, the warm weather did not cause too much discomfort due to low humidity.
On Saturday, India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji recorded 80% humidity at 8.30am and 55% at 5.30pm, both within the normal range.
The high temperatures in the last two days is due to dry air blowing in from the hinterlands. On the other hand, night temperatures also rose by two degrees on Saturday due to cloudy conditions caused by moisture incursion — an impact of Cyclone Gaja. The moisture incursion, however, will not have a serious effect on the state’s weather.
The local meteorological centre had recorded a minimum temperature of 20.8°C, 1.7 degrees below normal on Friday. Within 24 hours, on Saturday, it went up to 24.4°C, which is two degrees above normal and nearly four degrees overall.
IMD, Panaji has forecast maximum and minimum temperature of 35°C and 21°C on Sunday.
