PANAJI: The fish market in Panaji saw an abundant amount of fish and shrimp was being sold on Sunday. Restoring the enthusiastic negotiation between vendors and locals, fish of varying species were lined up at almost every stall, that otherwise wore a bleak and unoccupied look for the past few weeks.
“Trawlers have started bringing in generous amounts of fish.
We are expecting a continuous flow of fish from now on. Prices are likely to drop as and when more fish comes in,’ said Abdul Nadaf, a vendor.
However, the amount of fish coming into the market is still not enough to sustain the city’s demand. “There is 50% lesser fish in the market compared to last year, probably since fewer trucks from neighbouring states are coming in. But we are managing with what we have. Hopefully, more fish be brought in by trawlers the coming days,” said Ramesh Chavan, another vendor.
Others are skeptical of any redemption from the poor business that has prevailed over the past month. Shanti Kundaikar, said, “There is brisk sale of fish only among the non-Hindu communities since Shravan has already started. Our sales are likely to be the same until Ganesh Chaturthi.”
Locals, still reeling from the formalin scare, are hesitant to make a purchase. “There is no way to tell which fish is or isn’t caught locally. We therefore go to our usual vendors who tell us the difference. We are fine with the quality of fish,” said a buyer, Mahesh Patil, Dona Paula.
Savio Paes, a resident of Caranzalem, said, “We didn’t eat fish for a month due to the formalin issue. However, now that there is ample availability, we want to ensure that what is on our plate is healthy.”
