PANAJI: Camrabhat, in Taleigao, was sealed after a man tested positive for Covid on Wednesday.
The man works at GMC. His wife, who works as a sweeper for the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), and his other family members have also been tested.
Panaji mayor Uday Madkaikar said the family hosted a birthday party two days ago, which was attended by many neighbours.
All CCP’s workers from Camrabhat were told not to report to work until further notice.
“More than 80 workers engaged in garbage collection, garbage management, drivers and sweepers are all from Camrabhat. We have told them not to report to work until further notice,” Madkaikar stated.
However, the door-to-door garbage collection will continue in the city, he said.
“Besides door-to-door garbage collection, all other works, including lifting of mud, cleaning of drains and sweeping of roads will stop from Thursday because we are now short of 100 workers. The remaining workers will all be diverted to door-to-door collection as this cannot stop,” Madkaikar stated.
The population of Camrabhat is around 500, the mayor said.

Around a fortnight ago, the CCP had told around 70 of its workers from Chimbel not to report to work after a city market vendor who resides in Chimbel was suspected to be positive.
Later, the vendor turned out to be negative.
All the CCP staff, including the mayor, tested for Covid after that.
The city market was sanitised and shut and reopened following pressure from the traders association.
