Data compiled on teachers’ mistakes in board exams

PANAJI: In 2018, for the first time the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education introduced a penalty for teachers committing errors while conducting the Class X and XII public exams.
With all work related to the Class X and XII exams out of the way, the board has now begun compiling data on teachers found making any errors. Errors include those in the setting of the question papers, in conducting the exam and during correction of answersheets.
Goa board chairperson Ramkrishna Samant said that the errors spotted this year have been minimal.“We have just begun compiling the data,” he said.
In the case of paper corrections, for instance, the board received close to 4,000 reevaluation applications from students. But the maximum discrepancy in marks found in any of the papers after the process was only three marks.
The penalty is in the form of a fine which will be deducted from the remuneration payable to the teachers.
According to the procedure laid down by the board, after compiling the data on errors by teachers, ‘the major mistakes/serious lapses identified shall be placed before the executive council’ of the Goa board for its decision. The executive council’s decision has to be then confirmed by the general body of the board.
