Friday’s rain not due to any system: IMD
Panaji: A local phenomenon triggered a slight increase in rainfall on Friday morning, as a few centres received moderate rainfall after a few days of slack activity.
“This (rainfall on Friday) is purely a local phenomenon and not due to any system,” director of India meteorological department (IMD), Goa, Krishnamurty Padgalwar told TOI.
The rainfall had significantly reduced after the phase of vigorous activity during the first fortnight of August.
During the last five days, barring the last 24 hours, the state average of rainfall was below 20mm. During this month, the season’s wettest spell yielded an average rainfall of 143mm on August 15.
But on Friday morning, Valpoi recorded the highest amount of 36mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours, while Panaji recorded 23.9mm, Margao 23.3mm, Sanguem 22.4mm, Old Goa 20.4mm, Mapusa 20mm, Dabolim 15.6mm and other centres on a lesser scale.
The total rainfall during the season has touched 3,087.2mm, as compared to the normal figure of 2,552.3mm at this stage.
