Mapusa meet chalks out plans for Ganesh Chaturthi
SALIGAO: North Goa deputy collector Sudhir Kerkar instructed Mapusa police to keep a watch on nefarious activities by anti-social elements ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi.
He was speaking at a review meeting on Wednesday at the deputy collector’s office, to oversee the upcoming celebrations in the state. It was attended by officials from the fire department, Mapusa police, regional transport office (RTO), public works department (PWD), electricity department, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), as well as staff members from the office of the deputy collector.

Kerkar asked for suggestions to ensure a smooth conduct of the sarvajanik Ganesh celebrations in Mapusa. Mapusa councillor Tushar Tople raised the issue of traffic jams at the Mapusa market and suggested ways to reduce congestion. He asked Kerkar to prohibit rent-a-bike, rent-a-car services during the festivities, since they caused the most congestion.
“There are around 400 such vehicles, both two and four-wheelers, parked at the Mapusa market,” Tople said.
Kerkar agreed to the suggestion, saying he would hold a meeting with the RTO and MMC to chalk out a solution to the traffic problem.
He instructed the traffic cell to submit a report about the deployment of its personnel for the festival. He also suggested traffic police increase staff to avoid any congestion, or any law and order problems during the immersion.
